I compiled the pictured list from an online Bible study I'm participating in, The God of More by Cindy Colley and the subsequent online Bible class taught by Julie Orr under the name of Mama's Monday Moments.

The digging deep in God's word that this study requires results in a deeper understanding of the topic being studied.  As a result, I frequently come away with nuggets of gold that are just too good to keep to myself.  Such is the case with what I'm about to share today.  

I compiled this list as a ready reminder of how God wants us to deal with the trials and tribulations of this life.

What God’s Word Does for Me!

An often-heard sentiment expressed in word and deed is, what’s in it for me?’

Obviously, this can be applied to anything in life that we’re evaluating whether we want to put our time and effort into or not, and that includes being a student of God’s Word.

I follow someone on Youtube who does Bible markings, and she recently did a whole segment on ‘The Word.’

I’m a big proponent of marking scripture and when I saw this one, I couldn’t wait to get it in my Bible.  (I am an acquaintance of this woman and know her to be a faithful student of God’s Word.  I will not ever knowingly point you in the direction of someone who does not teach the whole truth of God’s Word.)

In the spirit of ‘what’s in it for me?’ and using the above-mentioned segment from Kathy Pollard’s Bible Marking channel, I’m sharing in a nutshell ‘what God’s Word does for me.’

Frees me

Lifts up my prayers

Increases my faith

Encourages me

Works on me

Completes me

Kathy gives you scriptures for each of the above mentioned, tells you what to mark, how to mark and in general teaches a lesson in the process.

I highly encourage you to watch this segment and if Bible marking is of interest to you, mark it in your Bible.   It’ll be in your Bible ready to remind you and or equip you to share/teach it to someone else when the opportunity arises.

My heart rejoices over the opportunity for Bible study and time in God’s Word is precious and like opening up a treasure chest.  The more I study, the more I want to study, and I want that for you as well.

If you’re not a student of God’s Word, this mark your Bible segment is a good place to start!  If you are, it’s a good place to be reminded of the blessings of being a student of God’s Word.

… the kind of brokenness that you experience when your world lays crumbled at your feet …

when the pain is so profound it’s hard to breathe …

when you’re just numb …

when questions run through your mind … why me or why didn’t I see this coming? …

When you find yourself wondering and even asking … God, why did you allow this to happen?

The first two why’s, in reality, don’t have concrete answers, but the third one, ‘why did God allow this to happen,’ in my mind, has a clear and easy answer. It’s not because God is uncaring or distant, it’s because God gave mankind freewill to choose Him and His goodness and in so doing, He gave us freewill to choose to do evil as well.  It’s that simple, mankind as a whole and individually, gets to choose and when evil is chosen, people are hurt … sometimes devastatingly so.

One of many beautiful things about God though, is that when mankind does choose evil over good, He is still willing and ready to help us overcome.

Let’s look at what He tells us in His word about brokenness beginning in Psalm 34:18. Can we just let this beautiful passage soak in … 

Psalm 34:18 … The Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.  (ESV)

This verse in context, is referring to those who are broken and crushed by the realization of sin in their lives; it’s written to those who are ready to obey God’s teachings, allowing Him to rescue and save them.  However, I don’t think it takes anything away from or adds to the image of God we see in this verse to apply it in the way we are using it.  God’s compassion shines through.  He is near, He cares and He rescues.  Does knowing this take the pain away from devastating brokenness, no, but it is comforting to know that God is aware and there and that makes the brokenness more bearable.

Let’s look at some more scriptures …

Psalm 147:3 … He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (NASB)

What a tender and caring image of our Father this brings to mind.  He is willing to take His broken children and bind up their wounds.  How comforting is that!

Psalm 121: 1 – 3 … I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.  He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. (NKJV)

What’s our role in healing from devastating brokenness?  We must look to God; we must acknowledge and know that He can and will help us through the brokenness.  We rest in the assurance that He watches over us 24/7 every day and night, and that He will not get tired of dealing with us/our pain and abandon us after a few days.

Do we always know what that care will look like, I can tell you that we will absolutely not always know, in fact, we very seldom know beforehand.  His care comes in small and big acts from others.  It comes from those who choose to walk this journey by our side, shoring us up when we feel like we can’t go on and it comes from faithful prayer warriors on our behalf.  (Sidenote:  this is one of many reasons we need to focus on being the hands and feet of Jesus while on this earth, God may be using us to help others through, sometimes silent, unbearable pain.)

Proverbs 3:5-6 … Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (NKJV)

This is the hard part, trusting … not leaning on our own understanding.  The head may be willing, but the heart may have deep devastating wounds that are yet to heal.  We need to trust anyway with whatever amount of trust we can produce.  God knows and He understands. 

It helps to acknowledge God’s goodness as we travel this journey, in fact we are told to.  In our brokenness, sharing what God has done and or is doing for us might help someone else who hears our testimony.  It also serves as a reminder to us that God is working in the situation.

Isaiah 41:10 … Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’ (NASB)

This is another hard part … not fearing … remembering that God is with us.  We need to take scriptures such as we are looking at today and commit them to memory, ‘write them on the door posts of our homes’ and hearts, always having them ready and before us to remind us that God is there, that He has not left us nor will He.

James 1:5 … But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. (NASB)

When we are so broken that we don’t know what to do, God wants us to ask Him for wisdom.  He wants us to ask Him for guidance and discernment to make the right and best decisions for the current scenario.  He assures us when we do, that He will liberally and without reproach give it to us.

Isaiah 58:11 …  And the Lord will continually guide you, and satisfy your desire in scorched places, and give strength to your bones; and you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.  (NASB)

Make no mistake, this is a long and most difficult journey to travel, it is also a faith building journey and as we can see God is more than willing to travel it with us, if we’ll let Him.  Do you see what else this verse tells us; it tells us we can survive and even thrive again … you will be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.

I have marked these scriptures in my Bible, and I would urge you to do the same.  If you have never experienced devastating brokenness and don’t feel this is relevant to your life right now, I would say, mark them in your Bible anyway.

Someday, somewhere God may place someone in your life that needs these promises to hold on to and in my humble opinion that’s reason enough to be ready to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Here’s how I label and mark these scriptures in my Bible that makes them readily accessible for use when needed …

On a blank page in the front of my Bible, I write:

Brokenness:  Psalm 34:18 (B)  (The “B” is an identifier.  Each topic will have a different identifying letter.)

I then turn to Psalm 34:18 and at the end of the verse write the next verse:   Psalm 147:3 (B)

Before I leave Psalm 34:18 though I highlight, or you may prefer to underline the words “The Lord is near” "saves" and “broken hearted” and “crushed in spirit.”

I use the same format for the rest of the verses chaining them all together.

In addition, for Psalm 147:3, I highlight or underline the words, “He heals” and “brokenhearted” and “binds up their wounds.”  I want the things God does to jump off the page at me as soon as I see it!  In the margin next to the verse, I write “heals and binds up.”

For Psalm 121: 1-3, I highlight or underline “my help comes from the Lord” and “He who keeps you will not slumber.”  I want to be reminded as soon as my eyes are drawn to the words that God is not slack in His looking out for me.

Proverbs 3:5-6, I highlight or underline “Trust in the Lord” and “acknowledge His path” and “He will make straight your paths.”  Another assurance that God can make something from the chaos and pain.

Isaiah 41:10, I highlight or underline the entire verse.  In the margin next to the verse, I write “God’s Assurance.”

James 1:5, I highlight or underline “ask of God” and “gives to all generously and without reproach” and “it will be given to him.”  In the margin next to the verse, I write ‘there are no silly or insignificant questions or requests to/for God.”

Isaiah 58:11, I highlight or underline “the Lord will continually guide you.”  In the margin next to the verse, I write “God stays on the job 24/7!”  I also write in the margin next to the verse ‘hope.’  That’s what God is giving us, hope that we will survive and that life will be good again someday.

I hope this topic helps you or equips you to help someone else.

I Just Had to Share ... Proverbs 3:1-10

In the spirit of Titus 2:3-5, I offer these thoughts to ladies ...

As I was studying my Bible this morning, I came across this passage that I have, as you can see, marked up.  Typically, when I mark in my Bible and or make notes it's because I want the verses to stand out and or remind me of what they're saying.  If you are a child of God, I hope it is a sweet reminder ... if you are not, I hope it gives you just a small insight as to what you're missing!

Let's look at how I've marked these Scriptures up in Proverbs, chapter 3:1-10 ...

 At the bottom of the page, which I didn't include, I have written the following ...

 Verses 1-10:  Notice the life blessings that come to those who choose to put the Lord first in their lives and hearts.

 With this in mind, let's unpack a few things in these verses ...

 look at the word 'heart' in verses 1, 3 and 5.

 verse 1:  let your heart keep my commandments ... do we want, with all of our heart to obey God's Word ... it's the 'want' that motivates the heart.  Side note:  did you know that our 'wants' can be trained and influenced by God's Word? Indeed, they can, just as they can be trained and influenced by the world ... it's our choice.

 verse 3:  write them on the tablet of your heart (what does this passage say to write on the tablet of our hearts ... I'll let you dig that answer out!)

 verse 5:  trust in the Lord with all your heart ... we must be convinced that God is the Great I AM and that He is able.

 We can see already that our heart is a big player in our relationship with God, but let me insert a warning here, make sure your heart is guided by God's word.  The heart is deceitful and just because we want to believe a thing, doesn't make the thing acceptable to God.  (Jeremiah 17:9)

 Verses 5 - 10 tell us what our part is ...

 verse 5:  trust in the Lord ... hmmmm, does anyone besides me ever struggle with this?  That's why I constantly ask God to strengthen my weak faith and make it a priority to study God's word, I can't even do this without God's help!

 verse 6: in all your ways acknowledge Him .... that's pretty self-explanatory isn't it!

 verse 7:  do not be wise in your own eyes ... get off the pride train if you find yourself on it!

 verse 7 again:  fear the Lord and turn away from evil ... respect, honor, revere; stand in awe of the Lord, recognize evil and avoid it whenever possible.

 verse 9:  honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce ... there it is, put God first in your finances and in all that you have.  That simply means support the spreading of God's word, make it a priority from your finances and from all that you have.  I believe included in that umbrella of honoring the Lord with what we have is helping those who are truly in need as well.  I know that there have been times in our lives when God has used Christians to provide for a specific unexpected need.  We as Christians, not only need to intentionally plan how we're going to honor the Lord with what He's blessed us with, but we also need to be ready to be used by God to meet unexpected needs of others, especially those of faithful Christians as they become known to us.  (Galatians 6:10) Without going off onto another topic, let me say that I do believe that God wants us to use discretion and be good stewards of what we have.  We surely don't want to enable someone by our giving to continue in sin, do we!

 There's lots more to unpack in these 10 verses, but I'll leave you to do that on your own.

 I hope my thoughts in some way will make you want to seek God and study His word more; may you be blessed by what you've read.

Devotional Thoughts: Psalm 23

This morning as I worked on the first month’s study in The Crown Bible study by Cindy Colley, I was touched by the reminder that our Good Shepherd cares.

We’re in Psalms 23 this month and as I read it, I was touched at how many ways this Psalms tells me that the Good Shepherd does indeed care!

Psalm 23

1  The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2  He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.

3  He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

4  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

5  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

6  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

I stopped and marked (yellow highlights in the picture) the ways He cares, the things He does that shows He cares listed in this passage of Scripture and added a ‘He cares!’ notation in the margin next to it.  (This would be a great passage to do a whole Bible study on, what David meant and possibly felt as he penned the Psalm and what it means for Christians today!)

I don’t know about you, but sometimes when the devil gets in my head, I need a reminder that the Good Shepherd cares and this passage is a good one.

Update:  later the same day ...  I listened to this sermon by Dan Winkler titled, Trust In Him Who Will Not Leave You based on Psalm 23.  If you are a Christian and you are carrying a heavy burden, I cannot recommend enough that you listen to this sermon as soon as you can.  There are many biblical nuggets of wisdom throughout the lesson that my heart clung to, this being one ... 'God will not play tug of war with your trials. You either give it to Him and let Him do His work with trust or carry on the way you are in misery.'   I needed to hear that, maybe you do too ...

Ways to Strengthen Our Sometimes-Weak Faith

I'm pretty sure that all Christians experience bouts of weakened faith from time to time.  It can be tough to get through on our own, but even in this, we are not alone.  Jesus is still our good Shepherd and is just waiting for us to call for help, yes, even when our faith is weak or has taken a blow.

Here are some ways that I've employed to help me get through those difficult times ...

How to Strengthen Our Sometimes-Weak Faith

(in no particular order)

Admit that your faith is weak to God in prayer.  Just acknowledging it is the first step in dealing with it. He's not going to belittle you or scold you for needing help in this area.  He loves us and wants us to come to Him with everything!

Study your Bible! As Christians, I hope you're a faithful student of God's Word.  If so, you have a whole book of remembrances of how God has been faithful to His people throughout history.  If you're not a faithful student of God's Word, then this is a good time to delve in and learn about God's faithfulness.

Along the same lines, take a look at your life and acknowledge God's faithfulness in your past.  A thumb through my prayer journal is a faith builder.  Seeing how God has answered past prayers is another reminder that He is faithful.  

Listen to spiritual songs that build your faith.  Create a playlist of faith building go-to songs ready to hit the button and play.

Ask God to strengthen your faith ...  the father of a demon possessed child did and God did!

Mark 9:23-25 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”  When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!”

What I Want in a Bible Study

I’ve reached a season in life where I’m done with the ‘fluff’ Bible studies that are common and readily available for women.

I’m done with the Christian motivational speaking women whose lessons have very little Bible in them.

I’m done with the preacher who stands in the pulpit and preaches what the congregation wants to hear instead of what God’s Word says.

I want the meat of God’s Word.

I want to hear faithful and true to God’s Word lessons from men in the pulpit and from women in women’s classes or at women’s speaking events.

I want something different than mainstream religion is offering.

‘Feel good religion’ has become an epidemic and we need men and women who aren’t afraid to say, ‘give me the meat of God’s Word, nothing more and nothing less.’

We need faithful men and women who aren't afraid to teach the meat of God's Word in their respective biblical roles.

I am one of those women!

I pray that you are too … so much is at stake.  If Satan can make us feel satisfied with fluff Christianity, then he doesn’t have to worry about us digging deep into the meat of God’s Word where he and his lies are exposed and where we truly find God's will for our lives.

Women are the hands that rock the cradle, they are the control center of their homes, they are the molders of the future ... think about that.  As women what are we, you and I, doing with our God given power?

Open My Eyes ... : Psalm 119:18

Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful words of Your Law.  Psalms 119:18 (NASB)

I love this verse, in fact it's my memory verse for the week. As I've worked on memorizing it, I've thought about what it was saying ...

Open my eyes ....  to unearth, discover, uncover, reveal

that I may behold ... take notice of, see, acknowledge, regard, pay attention to, consider

Wonderful words ... marvelous, surpassing, distinguishing

of Your Law ... Your Word, God's Word

I've also turned it into a prayer ... Open my eyes, O Lord, open my eyes to what Your Word teaches.

Bible study is so important in my walk with God.  Satan never makes it easy though, the temptation to, "do it later" is always lurking around just waiting for the opportunity to be used.

I read the following prayer in a Bible study I'm doing, God of All Comfort by Cindy Colley, that helps me combat the 'do it later' temptation.

"Father, help me to crave Your word and to overcome all the obstacles that are in my way of faithful Bible study."

I have this prayer written on a small post-it-note and washi taped in the front of my Bible.  I want to be reminded to pray this every time I have occasion to open my Bible. I'm also posting it on my refrigerator door and in a corner of my bathroom mirror.

You just gotta know that this is a prayer that God is delighted to answer!  We must do our part though, it looks like this ... the more we study, the more we want to study!  It starts out as a habit, then turns into a longing!

Peace That Passes Understanding

I’ve mentioned before the scripture writing study I am participating in, and yesterday's writing had us beginning with the book of Philippians. 

As is my routine, after I write each day's scripture to look back at the comments from group members on the previous day's writings. 

This morning I looked back on the comments from Philippians 1:1-4 and found such encouragement that I felt compelled to share it.  I hope it blesses you as much as its blessing me …

Peace that Passes Understanding

Paul is in prison in Rome being persecuted for Christ’s sake, yet he possessed a peace that passed understanding.

Philippians 4:7 … And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

That peace comes from being in a right relationship with God and from the knowledge of His Word.

Romans 5:1 … Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Because we are in a right relationship with God, He is with us.

Romans 8:31-34 …  What then shall we say to these things?  If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?  Who will bring a charge against God’s elect?  God is the one who justifies; who is the one who condemns?  Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather Who was raised, Who is a the right hand of God, Who also intercedes for us.

Because we are in a right relationship with God, He cares for us.

I Peter 5:7 … casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

Because we are in a right relationship with God, He protects us.

I Peter 3:13-14 … who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good?  But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed.  And do not fear their intimation, and do not be troubled.

This was so comforting to me this morning.  It’s my prayer that I make choices that will keep me in a right relationship with God.  I’m going to mark this brief study in my Bible as a reminder that my choices do matter and as a reminder of just some of the benefits of being a child of God.

The Testing of Our Faith!

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations that are discouraging …

Sometimes these situations seem to just go on and on with no end or improvement in sight …

Sometimes it seems our prayers and efforts don’t seem to be making a difference …

Could it be that our job is to remain faithful during this period of time, regardless of how long it is?

Could it be a time of testing for us?

Will we remain faithful, or will we give up or give in because we’re just so tired of holding on?

At one time or another all faithful Christians have had to make this choice, will we give up or in or will we remain faithful?

The following Scriptures have been helpful to me, I hope they are for you as well.:

I have them marked in my Bible under the title of ‘Comfort Scriptures While Prayerfully Waitng On the Lord’ …

Psalm 25:1-5 (ESV)…  To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.  O my God, in you I trust; let me not be put to shame; let not my enemies exult over me.  Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.

(Helpful Tip:  I like to write the next verse under or to the side of the current verse.  This strings them together and makes it easier to study.  Example:  in the picture of Psalm 25:1-5, notice at the bottom of the highlighted verses, I have written out the next verse which is Psalm 27:14.)

Psalm 27:14 (ESV) … Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!

Psalm 37: 3-9 (ESV) … Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.  Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices!  Refrain from anger and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land.

Psalm 40:1-5 (ESV) … I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.  He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds, and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.

Psalm 62:5-8 (ESV) … For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Psalm 130:5-6 (ESV) … I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word, I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.

Isaiah 40:31 (ESV) … but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.

(Helpful Tip:  How many times do you see/read the words 'trust' and 'wait?' Go back and underline those ... I'm going to!)

Are there situations in your life in which you need encouragement to hold on, to keep on keeping on?  Let theses verses give you comfort ... hold on … don’t give up or in … hold on to the Lord.

James 2:2-4 (ESV) … Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

I Corinthians 15:58 (ESV) ... Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

May God be glorified in all that we do!

Devotional Thoughts: Deuteronomy 31:8

Some days my heart just soars and overflows with thanksgiving to God over how He goes before me and provides the way.

Today has been one of those days!

Several weeks ago, I ran across an item in a clearance basket at a grocery store that I don't use a lot, but it was such a good price that I purchased some anyway.  Today I needed that item ... for medical purposes ... enough said!

Thank you, Lord, for going before me and providing the way!

And the Lord is the one who is going ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not desert you or abandon you. Do not fear and do not be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8  NASB

Devotional Thoughts: Romans 8:28

Sometimes sweet words of inspiration float into my mind. Such was the case one morning this week. 

Maybe someone else needs to hear these words also ...

You've been done wrong,
You've been deeply hurt,
Give it to Me,
Stay faithful,
I'll make something good come from it.

Romans 8:28:  And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (NKJV)
